Reverse osmosis

Industrial reverse osmosis: diagnosing a performance drop

Permeate flow, conductivity, pressures, temperature and cleaning: the data to connect before attributing drift to the membranes.

Describe the drift precisely

A performance drop may affect permeate flow, produced-water quality, energy use, cleaning frequency or several indicators at once. Diagnosis starts by dating the change and checking whether it affects all production conditions.

Spot readings are compared with trends. Water temperature, feed flow, pressure, recovery, conductivity and shutdown periods affect interpretation. A comparison made under different conditions can suggest a drift that has not been established.

Check upstream conditions before blaming membranes

Pretreatment, filters, dosing, valves and instrumentation condition reverse-osmosis operation. A change in raw water, a clogged filter, a pump no longer holding its duty point or a poorly calibrated sensor can produce similar symptoms.

The audit compares available analyses, pressure losses, chemical consumption, alarms and maintenance operations. It also checks recent changes in consumables, setpoints, suppliers, production pace or cleaning procedures.

Review cleaning and shutdowns

Cleaning frequency alone does not establish cleaning effectiveness. Solution preparation, concentrations, temperatures, circulation flows, durations, rinsing and the return-to-production criterion need to be documented according to the site procedure.

Shutdowns and restarts also matter. Preservation conditions, rinsing and possible stagnation are reviewed with available microbiological and chemical history. The diagnosis remains limited by the measurements that are actually accessible.

Decide between adjustment, maintenance and further study

The report ranks supported causes, hypotheses and remaining checks. An action may concern instrumentation, pretreatment, an automated sequence, pump maintenance, controlled cleaning or analysis of a membrane element.

Membrane replacement becomes an option when data and checks support it. Vanguard Waters can perform the one-off diagnosis, prepare the action plan and define with the operator which indicators to monitor after intervention.

Frequently asked questions

Does lower flow mean the membranes must be replaced?+

No. Temperature, raw water, pretreatment, filters, the pump, valves, instrumentation and settings need to be reviewed before reaching that conclusion.

Which trends should be retained?+

At minimum, feed, permeate and concentrate flows, pressures, conductivity, temperature, alarms and cleaning dates, according to the available instrumentation.

Can the audit be a one-off assignment?+

Yes. The diagnosis can be performed without a maintenance contract. Its scope and required data are confirmed before the intervention.
