Establish the tower water balance
Make-up water replaces evaporation, blowdown, drift and any other losses. Measuring make-up alone does not separate these uses. The audit records make-up and blowdown flows, basin levels, overflows, leaks and load conditions.
Volumes are compared with operating hours, production and available weather conditions. A seasonal change or a different heat load should not be treated as a performance drift without comparison on a consistent basis.
Compare flows and conductivity
Cycles of concentration describe the build-up of dissolved solids in recirculating water. They can be estimated from the ratio between blowdown-water conductivity and make-up-water conductivity. The ratio between make-up and blowdown volumes provides a second check where meters are available.
A difference between these ratios may indicate an incorrect measurement, leak, overflow or unmetered draw-off. The diagnosis checks sensors, valves, meters and operating history before a setpoint is changed.
Control any increase in cycles
Reducing blowdown can lower make-up-water demand. The limit depends on water quality, treatment, materials, temperature and the risks of scaling, corrosion and biological growth. A target value cannot be taken from a generic ratio.
The setting is defined with the water-treatment specialist. It states which parameters to monitor, alarm limits, test frequency and the response when make-up water or load changes. Microbiological control remains a separate requirement from the volume balance alone.
Prepare a measurable action plan
The action plan separates repairs, instrumentation work, blowdown settings and projects involving treatment or an alternative make-up-water source. Each action states the baseline data and the check to perform after implementation.
The Water Assessment can include the cooling tower in the complete site balance. It connects make-up, blowdown, energy and production conditions without presenting an estimated saving as an achieved result.
Frequently asked questions
Which meters should be installed on a cooling tower?+
A meter on make-up and another on blowdown allow the volumes to be compared. Their location, measurement range and reading method need to match actual tower operation.
Can blowdown be reduced by raising the conductivity setpoint?+
Only after reviewing water quality, treatment, materials and operating limits. An excessive setpoint may increase scaling, corrosion or biological risks.
Can recycled water be used as make-up?+
It is an option to assess. Its quality, variability, compatibility with treatment and availability when required need to be checked before a trial.
